First Day

Today was Ethan’s first day of school. The fear and apprehension for him from previous years as I walked away from my poor defenseless child, all alone of a horrible school yard of children, has been replaced by fear for the poor defenseless children around him and the desire to send a thank you note to his teacher just to get ahead of the curve.

He was a wee bit nervous but in high spirits. He identified every kid in his class before walking out onto the playground by the backpacks lined up outside the room. We ate breakfast together at a table that has been painted over several times and then primered in peeling gray. The lunchroom lady glared at me.

His 504 plan is in place. He played tether ball while I watched, lost, and the other kid lived to tell the tale. It’s 8 minutes into school so far and I haven’t gotten a phone call yet. I have high hopes.

As I left my muffin of perfection in the care of his nervously quivering teacher, I pressed a sticky note into the teacher’s hand. “It’s my phone number… and name. You’ll be screaming it later.”
